WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN FIRST CLASS AND STANDARD MAIL?
First Class Mail has priority handling in the postal service. If
the mail piece cannot be delivered for any reason, it will be either forwarded to a new address if a Change of Address was
filed with the postal service; or it will be returned to sender with the reason it was not forwarded. This is done at no additional
cost to the sender.
Postage is based on the weight of the mail piece, in whole ounce increments. Certain items
must be mailed at First Class rates--invoices, statement of account, letters (hand-written or typed and signed), and personal
correspondence. Individual mail pieces weighing over 13 ounces would be mailed using Priority Mail.
Standard (Bulk)
mail is used for advertising, newsletters, promotional pieces, and general information for a business or organization.
Mail that cannot be delivered (for any reason) will not be forwarded or returned without an ancillary endorsement
telling the postal service how you want undeliverable mail to be handled. If you use an ancillary endorsement, for any piece
of undeliverable mail there will be a charge for forwarding, returning or notifying the sender why the piece was not delivered.
Postage for Standard Mail is the same price for up to 3.3 ounces. Postage for items weighing more that 3.3 ounces,
but less than one (1) pound is based on a piece rate plus pound rate. These rates will vary if the piece is a letter-size
piece, a flat-size or an irregular parcel. Items weighing more than one (1) pound must be mailed as parcel post, bound-printed
matter or priority mail.
Delivery time on Standard Mail might (and probably will) take longer than delivery of
First Class Mail.
